1957년 자이푸르의 마하라자 사와이 만 싱 2세(Sawai Man Singh II)는 람바그 궁을 최고급 호텔로 개조하겠다는 결정을 내렸다. 이듬해인 1958년 람바그 팰리스 호텔이 문을 열었다. 인도 왕족이 거주하던 궁 중에서는 처음 있는 일이었다. 인도 독립 후 통치권을 상실하고 재정난에 시달리던 마하라자들이 잇따라 자이푸르의 예를 따랐다. 엄청난 부를 자랑하며 유럽의 사교계를 누비던 인도 왕족의 영화를 체험할 수 있는 호화로운 "유산 관광"(heritage tourism) 사업의 시작이었다. 람바그는 인도 각지의 유명한 궁전 호텔 중에서 그나마 접근도가 높은 편이다. 투숙객이 아닌 사람도 찾아가 식사를 할 수 있기 때문이다. 그래서인지 가장 "관광지"같은 느낌이 드는 곳이기도 하다. 자이푸르에는
